If you do a lot of portaging the custom fitted internal frame canoe packs from Ostrom Outdoors are second to none; they combine the harness and frame of an internal frame hiking pack with the size and durablility of a canoe pack.  If you feel you don't need the internal frame then a pack like the Nanabijou will suit your needs well.

 

Ostrom Canoe packs are triple stitched in 1000D Cordura Nylong for maximum strength and abrasion resistance.  All seams are sewn 3, yes 3 times and the bottom is a double layer of Cordura and Ballistic nylon.  Foam is EVA closed cell foam that does not compress over time and has an excellent life.

Vinyl Packs are the least expensive and the least comfortable option for a canoe pack but for those occasional users or those who portage very little they work well.  For more comfort and much more durability step up to an Ostrom canoe pack.  Another alternative is a barrel and harness which is more comfortable than a vinyl bag but less so than a pack but the durability is awesome
